Ex-Minister for Europe Denis MacShane, who we have written about here has been charged by the Crown Prosecution Service with false accounting. Details can be found at these links: BBC, Daily Telegraph, Guido Fawkes.
Regardless of the outcome of the trial, MacShane had previously fallen foul of the House of Commons Standards and Privileges Committee in regards to his expenses.
MacShane of course gave Croatia a hard time over Gotovina, and that should not be forgotten in light of all this. Further, it does make the point that wrong-doing by officials and politicians is not limited to Croatia, and as the case of MacShane shows, is done in states that have been critical of Croatia.
Fortunately, MacShane is no longer in power; and today’s UK government seems better disposed to Croatia.
